The Hurco Purchase That Taught Me About Total Cost of Ownership

I get why people go with the cheapest option—budgets are real. But the hidden costs add up. Here's a simplified version of the heuristic I now use:

  2. Add 15% automatically for rigging, install, and tooling.
  3. If the machine is over 6,000 spindle hours, add another 10% for likely controls or spindle work.
  4. Ask about the dealer's service network. A machine isn't just hardware—it's the ability to get it running when it isn't.
  5. Ask whether a used control panel PDF and schematics are included. This one seems trivial. It isn't.

To be fair, this approach doesn't work for every purchase. If you need a machine now because a major contract is on the line, you take the best option you can get and you negotiate based on speed, not price. But if you have two weeks to compare, do the full analysis.

One vendor said something during this process that I keep thinking about. When I asked about a service contract, he said: "Honestly, I can sell you the contract, but you might not need it. Your operators seem to know what they're doing. If you want to skip it and just call us when something comes up, that's fine—but I'd still recommend a one-time commissioning visit."

That kind of honesty is rare. The vendor who said "this isn't our strength—here's who does it better" earned my trust for everything else. I'd rather work with a specialist who knows their limits than a generalist who overpromises.

If you're in the middle of your own used CNC search and you're looking at Hurco listings because of the control or the reputation, do yourself a favor: ignore the list price until you've seen the machine, talked to the dealer, and checked the hours with your own eyes. And if someone tells you that "all CNC machines are basically the same," ask them how many they've owned. That answer will tell you more than any spec sheet.
